Preliminary work

Preliminary work for removing and installing steering column

1. Remove steering column switch. -> 945019 Removing and installing steering column switch - section on "Removing" Service and Repair

3. Remove knee airbag on vehicles with a knee airbag.

Turbo engine:
4. Remove primary catalytic converter. -> 267619 Removing and installing primary catalytic converter - section on "Removing"

Diesel engine:

Removing steering column (centre)

Information

- Fore-and-aft adjustment must be brought to the fully extended position for the electrically adjustable steering column. Vertical adjustment must be moved to the centre position.

Steering column





1. Loosen fastening screws -1- on the heat shield -2- at the steering gear.

Remove heat shield -2-.
2. Loosen the clamping screw -1- on the steering column -2- at the steering gear -3-.

Slide the steering column -2- upwards -arrow- and pull it down off the steering gear -3- ( -A- ).
3. Remove nuts used to secure the sealing bellows on the bulkhead -arrows- (one lock nut hidden).
For diesel engines: Remove nuts used to secure the sealing bellows from the wheel housing -arrows- (one lock nut hidden).

4. On vehicles with a knee airbag, loosen the fastening screws -1- on the knee airbag holder -2- and remove the holder. Remove strut.

5. Remove the tie-wrap -2- at the steering column -1-.

6. Pull the floor covering in the passenger's footwell to the rear.

CAUTION

Sharp edges on the steering column.

- Risk of cuts or gashes to the hands.

-> Wear safety gloves.

7. Loosen the fastening screws -2- for the steering column -1- on the mounting bracket from below.

8. Important - possibility of mix-ups! Never unscrew the fastening screw -1- at the side (see also Step 9).

9. Unscrew the side fastening screw -2- for the steering column -4- out of the mounting bracket using multiple-tooth socket-wrench insert Nr.31. Counter at the fastening nut -3- while doing this.

10. Carefully set down the steering column.
11. The air duct -1- (diagram shown without steering column) remains installed when removing the steering column.

12. Disconnect combination connector and electric plug connection for steering column. To do this:
12.1. Cut tie-wrap -1- from the holder of the combination connector at the mounting bracket.

12.2. Release electric plug connection -2- at the steering column -1- ( -a- ) and pull it off -arrow-.

12.3. On vehicles with electrical steering column adjustment, release combination connector -4- under the dashboard at the mounting bracket -b- and unplug it.
The electric plug connection -3- must not be disconnected at the steering column -1- as other lines are still inserted.
13. Remove the entire steering column from the vehicle.

Installing steering column (centre)

Information

- Observe the tightening sequence of steering column at mounting bracket.

- Once the battery is disconnected, perform the work required for full restoration of normal driving. -> 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery

- Calibrate the steering-angle sensor using the Porsche System Tester. -> 456005 Initialising and calibrating steering-angle sensor Testing and Inspection

- The electric steering column locking mechanism (ELV) must be taught using the Porsche System Tester. You can get the necessary immobiliser code from IPAS or from your importer by specifying the vehicle identification number.

- The electrically adjustable steering column must be adapted in the vehicle. -> 729319 Removing and installing control unit for memory seat adjustment 729319 Removing and installing control unit for memory seat adjustment

- Always replace the fastening screw -1- for the universal joint of the steering column.





Installing steering column

- Replace locking screws and nuts.

- Visually inspect all parts.

- Observe correct tightening torques. -> 4X00IN Tightening torques for steering [1][2]Specifications

Information

The steering column must only be replaced as a complete unit. Individual components cannot be disassembled or replaced.

1. Insert the entire steering column into the vehicle through the passenger compartment.
2. Secure combination connector and electric plug connection for the steering column. To do this:
2.1. Plug in electric plug connection -2- at the steering column -arrow- and lock it -a-.

2.2. On vehicles with electrical steering column adjustment, plug in combination connector -4- and lock it -b-.
2.3. Fasten the combination connector to the mounting bracket holder using a new tie-wrap -1-.

3. Insert the steering column -1- into the mounting bracket.
Place the fastening screws -2- for the steering column -1- in the mounting bracket from below and then fit them.
Observe the tightening sequence.-> 4X00IN Tightening torques for steering [1][2]Specifications.

4. Place the side fastening screw -2- for the steering column -4- in the mounting bracket and then fit it using multiple-tooth socket-wrench insert Nr.31. Counter at the fastening nut -3- while doing this. -> 4X00IN Tightening torques for steering [1][2]Specifications

5. Fit strut. On vehicles with a knee airbag, fit the fastening screws -1- on the knee airbag holder -2-.

6. Fit the steering column -2- on the steering gear -3-.





Installing steering column

6.1. Slide the steering column -2- from above -arrow- onto the steering gear -3- as far as it will go -A-.
6.2. Fit clamping screw. -> 4X00IN Tightening torques for steering [1][2]Specifications
Always use a new clamping screw.
7. Fit the lock nuts for mounting the sealing bellows on the bulkhead -arrows- (one lock nut hidden).
For diesel engines: Remove the lock nuts for mounting the sealing bellows from the wheel housing -arrows- (one lock nut hidden).

8. Position the heat shield -2- on the steering gear and fit the fastening screws -1-.

Subsequent work

Subsequent work for removing and installing steering column

1. Install knee airbag on vehicles with a knee airbag.
2. Remove lower dashboard trim panel on driver's side. -> 701919 Removing and installing trim panel under dashboard - section on "Installing" 701919 Removing and installing trim panel under dashboard
3. Install steering column switch. -> 945019 Removing and installing steering column switch - section on "Installing" Service and Repair

Turbo engine:
4. Install primary catalytic converter. -> 267619 Removing and installing primary catalytic converter - section on "Installing"

Diesel engine:
