Preliminary work

1. Remove trim panel for rear lid. -> 709219 Removing and installing trim panel for tailgate - section on "Removing" Service and Repair
2. Remove rear spoiler. -> 665819 Removing and installing rear spoiler - section on "Removing" 665819 Removing and installing rear spoiler
3. Remove trim panel for rear lid (handle strip). -> 664819 Removing and installing trim panel for rear lid (handle strip) - section on "Removing"
4. Disconnect wire harness for rear lid without touching the area in the headliner. -> 972719 Removing and installing wire harness for tailgate - section on "Removing" 972719 Removing and installing wire harness for tailgate

Removing rear lid

CAUTION

Incorrect handling of gas-filled shock absorbers

- Gas-filled shock absorbers can burst
- Risk of eye injuries
- Risk of bruising

-> Gas-filled shock absorbers must be in idle state before removal.
-> Open the lid.
-> Secure the lid to prevent it from closing accidentally following removal of the gas-filled shock absorbers.
-> Do not use force to open the gas-filled shock absorbers because of their high internal pressure.

Information

- Only remove the wiring harness from the rear lid as far as the lid hinge.

1. A second person should hold the rear lid to prevent it from closing accidentally.

Only for vehicles with Power Lift Tailgate
2. Remove actuating cylinder for rear lid at the top of the rear lid. -> 557319 Removing and installing actuating cylinder for rear lid - section on "Removing" 557319 Removing and Installing Actuating Cylinder for Rear Lid

Only for vehicles without Power Lift Tailgate
3. Remove gas-filled shock absorber for rear lid at the top of the rear lid. -> 559319 Removing and installing rear gas spring - section on "Removing" Service and Repair
4. Unscrew fastening screws securing rear lid to lid hinges.

Installing rear lid

1. Tighten fastening screws for rear lid to => Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.).

Only for vehicles with Power Lift Tailgate
2. Secure actuating cylinder for rear lid at the top of the rear lid. -> 557319 Removing and installing actuating cylinder for rear lid - section on "Installing" 557319 Removing and Installing Actuating Cylinder for Rear Lid

Only for vehicles without Power Lift Tailgate
3. Secure gas-filled shock absorber for rear lid at the top of the rear lid. -> 559319 Removing and installing rear gas spring - section on "Installing" Service and Repair

Subsequent work

1. Install trim panel for rear lid. -> 709219 Removing and installing trim panel for tailgate - section on "Installing" Service and Repair
2. Install rear spoiler. -> 665819 Removing and installing rear spoiler - section on "Installing" 665819 Removing and installing rear spoiler
3. Install trim panel for rear lid (handle strip). -> 664819 Removing and installing trim panel for rear lid (handle strip) - section on "Installing"
4. Install wire harness for rear lid. -> 972719 Removing and installing wire harness for tailgate - section on "Installing" 972719 Removing and installing wire harness for tailgate
