Removing sealing ring for vibration balancer
Information
The sealing ring behind the vibration balancer cannot be replaced separately, instead it is integrated into the joint flange. The entire joint flange must be replaced in the event of leaks.
The oil pan must first be removed to ensure that the seal is secure. The bead of sealant may be destroyed if the oil pan remains fitted when installing the joint flange.
1. Remove joint flange behind the crankshaft pulley. To do this, remove the remaining fastening screws -A- (not the screws in the removed oil pan -B- ) and lever the joint flange off using a screwdriver => Levering off joint flange.

2. Remove any sealant residue on all sealing faces.
3. Clean crankshaft journal. Remove any oil residues from the crankshaft journal with a cloth. The crankshaft journal must not be dirty or rusty. If necessary, clean it with brake cleaner and grind off any rust with a metal-polishing pad (e.g. Never Dull).
Installing sealing ring for vibration balancer
1. The sealing faces must all be clean and free of grease.
2. Apply the sealant 000 043 300 39 as shown in the illustration -arrows- (status as at 11/2005, for details of currently used sealant, see Parts Catalogue). Make sure that the bead of sealant is not thicker than approx. 2 to 3 mm and is applied on the inside past the bores. Fit the joint flange within 5 minutes.

3. Push special tool (guide sleeve) assembly fixture T10215 -1- onto the crankshaft journal -3- at the front. Push joint flange -2- over the guide sleeve and place in installation position.
