Preliminary work

Information

Before disconnecting the battery, move the driver and passenger seat all the way back.

Safety instructions for passenger airbag

WARNING

Incorrect handling of airbag units

- Triggering of airbag unit
- System faults can occur

-> Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
-> A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.
-> Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.
-> Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
-> Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.
-> Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.
-> Replace damaged parts during removal.
-> Always position the airbag unit in such a way that the airbag opening is facing upwards.
-> If removed for an extended period, the airbag unit must be stored in a safe place.
-> Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.
-> Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90°.
-> Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.
-> Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
-> Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

WARNING

Incorrect handling of safety bolts

- Danger of injury
- Loss of torque

-> Always use new fastening screws and nuts following removal.
-> Observe specified tightening torques.
-> Carry out a visual inspection of all re-used parts.

Installation position of dashboard

1. Loosen two fastening screws -1- on the passenger airbag unit from the mounting bracket.

2. Release and unplug the two electric plug connections for the passenger airbag unit.

3. Unclip line bracket -2- from the dashboard at the left and right.

4. Unplug electric plug connections for the servo motors for the centre air vents at the top.

5. Unplug electric plug connection for the temperature sensor for the outer air vents at the left and right.

6. Unplug electric plug connection for the ignition starter switch. -> 280419 Removing and installing ignition starter switch - section on "Removing" Service and Repair
7. Remove dashboard.

7.1. Unscrew fastening screw -3- from the top.
7.2. Unscrew fastening screws -4- at the sides of the dashboard.
7.3. Unscrew fastening screws -5- at the front of the dashboard.
8. Pull the dashboard -6- inwards out of the three retaining clips -7-.

Installing dashboard

1. Carefully guide the dashboard into place and position it.
2. Push the dashboard -6- into the three retaining clips -7-.
Ensure that no wires are trapped while fitting the dashboard.

3. Secure the dashboard.

3.1. Tighten fastening screws -5- at the front to => Tightening torque: 1.5 Nm (1 ftlb.)+/-15 %.
3.2. Tighten fastening screws -4- at the sides to => Tightening torque: 1.5 Nm (1 ftlb.)+/-15 %.
3.3. Tighten fastening screw -3- at the top to => Tightening torque: 1.5 Nm (1 ftlb.)+/-15 %.
4. Plug in electric plug connection for the ignition starter switch. -> 280419 Removing and installing ignition starter switch - section on "Installing" Service and Repair
5. Plug in electric plug connection for the temperature sensor for the outer air vents at the left and right.

6. Plug in electric plug connections for the servo motors for the centre air vents at the top.

7. Clip wiring into the dashboard at the left and right.

8. Plug in and lock the two electric plug connections for the passenger airbag unit.

9. Tighten two fastening screws -1- on the passenger airbag unit to => Tightening torque: 8 Nm (6 ftlb.).

Subsequent work

1. Install cover for instrument panel (defroster trim). -> 702019 Removing and installing cover for instrument panel (defroster trim) - section on "Installing" 702019 Removing and installing cover for dashboard (defroster trim)
2. Install front loudspeakers (dashboard). -> 914019 Removing and installing front loudspeakers (dashboard) - section on "Installing" 914019 Removing and installing front loudspeakers (dashboard)
3. Vehicles with PCM display and operator control unit: Install display and operator control unit. -> 911019 Removing and installing PCM 3.1 display and operator control unit - section on "Installing" 911019 Removing and installing PCM 3.1 display and operator control unit
4. Vehicles with car radio: Remove car radio. -> 912419 Removing and installing car radio - section on "Installing" Service and Repair
