Removal Procedure
Warning:
Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning Battery Disconnect Warning.
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).
2. Remove the camshaft covers. Refer to:
* Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left Side Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left Side
* Camshaft Cover Replacement - Right Side Camshaft Cover Replacement - Right Side
3. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling Cooling System Draining and Filling.
4. Remove the radiator outlet hose. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (LFX) Radiator Outlet Hose ReplacementRadiator Outlet Hose Replacement (L77) Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement.
5. Compress the coolant bleed hose retaining clamp (4) at the outlet housing and slide the coolant bleed hose retaining clamp 50 mm (2 in) along the coolant bleed hose (3).
6. Remove the coolant bleed hose (3) from the outlet housing (1).
7. Disconnect the coolant recovery hose (2) from the outlet housing (1).
8. Plug or cap the cooling system hoses and inlets.
9. Remove the water outlet housing (2). Refer to Water Outlet Replacement Service and Repair.
10. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement Service and Repair.
11. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement Service and Repair.
12. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement (L77) Generator ReplacementGenerator Replacement (LFX) Generator Replacement.
13. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (L77) Generator Bracket ReplacementGenerator Bracket Replacement (LFX) Generator Bracket Replacement.
Note:
* DO NOT drain the power steering fluid.
* DO NOT disconnect the power steering pipes.
* The locking tang on the power steering reservoir bracket (2) must be released before removing the power steering reservoir (1). Release the locking tang on the power steering reservoir bracket (2) with a suitable tool.
14. Separate the power steering fluid reservoir (1) from the power steering fluid reservoir bracket (2).
15. Reposition the power steering fluid reservoir away from the power steering fluid reservoir bracket (2).
Note:
DO NOT disconnect the power steering pipes/hoses.
16. Remove the power steering pump to power steering bracket retaining bolts (3).
17. Remove the power steering pump (1) from the power steering bracket (2).
Note:
Support the power steering pump after removal.
18. Reposition the power steering pump (1) away from the power steering bracket (2).
19. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir bracket to engine front cover retaining bolts (5).
20. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir bracket (6).
21. Remove the power steering bracket to cylinder head retaining bolt (3).
22. Remove the power steering bracket to engine front cover retaining bolt (1).
23. Remove the power steering bracket to cylinder block retaining bolt (2).
24. Remove the power steering pump bracket (4).
25. Disconnect the A/C pressure transducer electrical connector (4).
26. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector (5).
Note:
DO NOT disconnect the A/C pipes (2) from the A/C compressor (6).
27. Remove the A/C compressor to A/C compressor/power steering pump mounting bracket retaining bolts (1).
Note:
Support the A/C compressor after removal.
28. Reposition the A/C compressor (6) away from the A/C compressor mounting bracket (3).
29. Remove the compressor bracket mounting bolts (1).
30. Remove the compressor bracket (2).
31. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement Service and Repair.
32. Remove the camshaft position sensors. Refer to:
* Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Exhaust Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Exhaust
* Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Exhaust Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Exhaust
* Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Intake Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Intake
* Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Intake Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Intake
33. Remove the camshaft position (CMP) actuator solenoids. Refer to:

* Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Exhaust
* Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Intake
* Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Exhaust
34. Remove the engine front cover with the water pump assembly. Refer to Engine Front Cover Removal 12. Engine Front Cover Removal.
35. Disassemble the engine front cover as necessary. Refer to Engine Front Cover Disassemble 74. Engine Front Cover Disassemble.
Warning
Use of eye goggles is necessary to prevent personal injury.
Note:
Do not use sharp and/or metal gasket scrapers to clean the sealing surfaces.
36. Clean the engine front cover sealing surfaces. Refer to Engine Front Cover Cleaning and Inspection 75. Engine Front Cover Cleaning and Inspection.
Installation Procedure
Note:
* Make sure all the threaded bolt holes are thoroughly cleaned and all micro-encapsulated thread sealant is removed.
* Bolts with micro-encapsulated thread sealant must be discarded after removal and replaced with new bolts.
1. Assemble the engine front cover as necessary. Refer to Engine Front Cover Assemble 76. Engine Front Cover Assemble.
2. Install the water pump to the engine front cover. Refer to Water Pump Installation 122. Water Pump Installation
3. Use the engine front cover installation guide pins EN-46109 - pins to install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Installation 121. Engine Front Cover Installation.
4. Install the camshaft position (CMP) actuator solenoids. Refer to:
* Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Intake
* Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Exhaust
* Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Intake
* Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Exhaust
5. Install the camshaft position sensors. Refer to:
* Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Intake Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Intake
* Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Exhaust Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 1 (Right Side) Exhaust
* Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Intake Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Intake
* Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Exhaust Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 (Left Side) Exhaust
6. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement Service and Repair.
7. Install the compressor bracket (2).
Caution:
Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.
8. Install the compressor bracket mounting bolts (1) and tighten to 58 Nm (43 lb ft).
Note:
Do not twisted or kink the A/C pipes when installing the A/C compressor.
9. Install the A/C compressor (6) with the A/C pipes (2) to the A/C compressor mounting bracket (3).
10. Install the compressor to compressor mounting bracket retaining bolts (1) and tighten to 22 Nm (16 lb ft)
11. Connect the A/C pressure transducer electrical connector (4).
12. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connector (5).
13. Install the power steering pump bracket (4).
14. Install the power steering bracket to cylinder head retaining bolt (3) and tighten to 58 Nm (43 lb ft).
15. Install the power steering bracket to engine front cover retaining bolts (1) and tighten to 58 Nm (43 lb ft).
16. Install the power steering bracket to cylinder block retaining bolt (2) and tighten to 58 Nm (43 lb ft).
17. Install the power steering fluid reservoir bracket (6).
18. Install the power steering fluid reservoir bracket to engine front cover retaining bolts (5) and tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb ft).
19. Install the power steering pump (1) to the power steering pump bracket (2).
20. Install the power steering pump to power steering pump bracket retaining bolts (3) and tighten to 27 Nm (22 lb ft).
Note:
Make sure the power steering reservoir (1) and the locking tang on the power steering reservoir bracket (2) are engaged to avoid an induced rattle condition.
21. Install the power steering fluid reservoir (1) to the power steering fluid reservoir bracket (2).
22. Install the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (L77) Generator Bracket ReplacementGenerator Bracket Replacement (LFX) Generator Bracket Replacement.
23. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement (L77) Generator ReplacementGenerator Replacement (LFX) Generator Replacement.
24. Install the belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement Service and Repair.
25. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement Service and Repair.
26. Install the water outlet housing. Refer to Water Outlet Replacement Service and Repair.
27. Remove the plug or cap from the cooling system hoses and inlets
28. Install the coolant bleed hose (3) to the outlet housing (1).
29. Compress the coolant bleed hose retaining clamp (4) and position back to its original location on the coolant bleed hose (3).
30. Connect the coolant recovery hose (2) to the outlet housing (1).
31. Install the radiator outlet hose. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (LFX) Radiator Outlet Hose ReplacementRadiator Outlet Hose Replacement (L77) Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement.
32. Install the camshaft covers. Refer to:
* Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left Side Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left Side
* Camshaft Cover Replacement - Right Side Camshaft Cover Replacement - Right Side
33. Install the intake manifold assembly. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement Service and Repair.
34. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling Cooling System Draining and Filling.
35. Change the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement Service and Repair.
36. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).
